“You’re so lucky!” Am I?

A saying that we hear a lot. Is it true that we are lucky? ┬áTravellers HATE when people say this and I can agree but there has to be two sides to this. I feel lucky but I worked hard and made this happen. After much debate and hearing others opinions I’ve come to a few conclusions.

There is nothing more frustrating when you work to make something happen and others undermine that work as luck. I am not travelling because I am lucky. I am travelling because I wanted it and made changes in my life so this became a possibility. When people tell me “You’re so lucky!” I can only imagine that it’s because they may not have had the courage to take on such a huge task, to sacrifice certain luxuries and head off alone into the world not really knowing what was going to happen. By establishing that my travels are pure luck it means it’s not their fault that they didn’t do it. That’s how I see it anyway to curb my rage at their ignorance of what I’ve had to go through and still go through so I’m able to do this.

On the other hand. I do feel lucky when I’m experiencing and seeing such dramatic and inspiring places. When driving through the salt flats in Bolivia, sleeping under the mountains in the Peruvian Andes, trekking past turquoise lakes in Patagonia. It’s hard not to feel lucky that I get to witness this and expand my views on the world. When I say lucky though, I mean it from the aspect that we are all lucky to have such a beautiful world on our doorstep. We are lucky that there are places which can make you feel so small and insignificant that it instantly humbles you. I’m lucky that with my travels I feel more open and accepting everyday.

To add to the ‘luck’ of travelling, I’ve never felt luckier to have the people I’ve accumulated in my life. You realise how important family is, who are truly great friends and what support you have out there that you just didn’t know about. It doesn’t go unnoticed when a simple message of support pops up in your messenger from a friend at home. I feel a huge debt to my family and friends for making me feel so happy and thankful.

  1. I so agree to that one , nothing really comes of luck when it comes to making your dreams a reality! For anything to happen in our lives must come of our own doing , however we are fortunate to experience and get the feel of the vast world around us in peace excitement and love. xxx love you always
